The Hydrogen Transport Forum (HTF) welcomes the National Cabinet’s focus on strengthening Australia’s fuel security and supply chain resilience, including agreement to a coordinated National Fuel Security Plan.

Recent developments reinforce that fuel security is no longer just about maintaining supply – it is about reducing reliance on imported fuels over time. Australia currently imports the majority of its refined fuel, leaving the economy exposed to global disruptions.

Transport is central to this challenge. While battery electric vehicles will play a key role in reducing fuel demand, hydrogen will be critical for heavy transport and high-utilisation fleets where diesel remains dominant.

HTF members and industry participants, including BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, Foton and KRW Hydron, are already investing in hydrogen and zero-emission transport solutions globally and in Australia. This includes hydrogen fuel cell applications across light and heavy vehicle platforms, alongside development of local hydrogen refuelling projects.

As governments progress implementation of the National Fuel Security Plan, HTF members are ready to be consulted and to contribute practical expertise on how zero-emission transport technologies can support fuel security outcomes.

Australia has the capability to produce hydrogen domestically at scale. Targeted deployment of hydrogen-powered trucks, buses, cars and supporting refuelling infrastructure can strengthen national resilience while supporting industry and emissions reduction objectives.

HTF looks forward to working with governments to support practical, near-term deployment of zero-emission transport solutions.
